Hits Win!!!

For reals this time.

In another one of our trademark last-inning comebacks, the Solid Gold Hits pulled off the 8-7 victory over the rival Bulldogs.

The game started strong with the Hits pounding beers and spiked hot cocoa on their way to an early 3-0 lead. From there on, it was a back and forth affair until the final inning when the Hits found themselves down 7-5.

Then, with the bases loaded, ringer John came through with a 2-RBI double to tie the game. With two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Hugh came up to the plate. After fouling two off, he got a hold of one. With what has be one of the best hit balls in all of Solid Gold Hits history, Hugh hit a laser-shot over the shortstop's head to secure the victory.

You'd think that one of those two big hits would earn John or Hugh the gameball, but let's remember that this was the Bulldogs we were playing - the same team that took out Jessica. Lisa remembered this fact, and even though she already had significant knee pain, she was the only one of us who had the guts to take out the Bulldog's second baseman. This combined, with the fact she got a hit, scored a run and got a glove on the hardest hit ball of the night, earned her the gameball - which she quickly downed.

So, with that, the season ends. Outside of that one 6-game losing streak, we had a spectacular season. We started strong, we ended strong and we drank strong.

Of course, an end-of-season award ceremony is in the works. Stay tuned for details.

See you in the spring!

Hits Win!!!

Just kidding, we got killed.

I don't even know what the score was, but we lost by a lot. And we didn't even play poorly, they just hit the crap out of the ball and didn't' make any errors. Generally, we need the other team to commit a lot of errors for us to have a chance.

I thought we made great contact at the plate, but we have an uncanny knack for hitting right to people. The Luck Dragons did not return the favor as they had us running all over the field and taking turns throwing the ball over each other's heads.

On the plus side, one of their players dented another one of their player's cars with a towering foul ball to the parking lot.

I think the final score was like 14-3...and it wouldn't have been that close if we hadn't called in a ringer, Melody, from the Thursday night Slugs. Melody, the game ball winner, drove in two runs and had a nice assist in the outfield as a flyball bounced off her mitt and into Coach Nick's.

This game possibly marked Dustin's last appearance as a Solid Gold Hitter as he will no longer live in the area come next season. We're gonna have to try to convince him to fly in for games.

The post-game festivities were highlighted by Mets' Jersey Guy from Majority Rules showing up late to his game wearing a snappy outfit consisting of what appeared to be acid-washed jeans pulled right on up to his ample man-bosoms paired with a yellow t-shirt, rope belt and top-siders. While we kept the heckling to a minimum, there were many jokes made at his expense. Can't wait to play those effers next season.

So we've got one game left and it's another stupid 9:30 game. We'll be taking on the Bulldogs with our pride on the line. If we can salvage a victory against them at least we'll enter the off-season with a little bit of our dignity intact....not that we had a lot to begin with.

We will probably have a little pre-game gathering to keep us awake for the game, so stay tuned for more info on that.

Majority Rules: The Worst Team Ever

Ok, so we lost again. I don't even care. At least we play the game the right way.

Majority Rules defeated us tonight, but they sacrificed whatever shred of dignity they had left to do so. In what has to be a D-League first, they won on two walks in the last inning. They refuse to swing the bat.

Joe DiMaggio is spinning in his grave. I can guarantee you that he had to swing the bat occassionally to hit in 56 games straight games. According to my records, the sissy-ballers on Majority Rules have hit in zero straight games because, and I've mentioned this before, they refuse to swing the bat.

The game was not without its highlights for us though. Co-game ball winner, Julie V., made a great catch behind homeplate and Zep had a great 2-RBI hit. Coach Nick also pulled in co-ownership of the game ball for not giving into the the urge to get into a pissing match with a team that, and perhaps you've heard this about them, refuses to swing the bat.

This was our last game with these jackholes this season, but next time around I suggest that we just give them the victory in exchange for them swinging the bat. If winning a battle for last place in D-League Co-ed softball is so important to them that they will take a million decent pitches in an effort to score more runs, then I say we just give them the "W" before we even start, but we allow no walks in the game.

Personally, I don't care if we win or lose, but I know it's not any fun to stand there and watch a softball, pitched slowly, bounce on the ground. There are much better places to be at 10pm on a tuesday night than watching bozos not swing a bat. In my opinion, they didn't beat us at softball, they beat us at walking around a diamond shape. Why do they even bring a bat?

But we're done with them. Next week, we play a team that swings the bat quite often and quite well, The Luck Dragons. And we get to play at a decent hour (6:30). Hope you can make it, if for no other reason than to give the ol' stinkeye to Majority Rules who, if you haven't heard, refuse to swing the bat.

For the record, even though its namesake team makes Joe DiMaggio sad, I still support the concept of majority rules as a tenet of our society.

The Streak Continues

The losing streak that is.

After falling 9-7 to the stupid Bulldogs last night, the Solid Gold Hits have now dropped four straight games. While this is somewhat of a disappointment, it should be mentioned that all the games have been win-able, but for some reason we just couldn't pull it off. I blame Santa Claus.

We really didn't play bad so I'm not really sure how we manged to lose. We just made our mistakes at the wrong times, I guess.

Here are the highlights:

* Lisa displays some unconventional, but overall effective, fielding methods at second base. She kept two hard grounders in front of her by cleverly bouncing the ball off her foot. Another, she didn't hassle with actually putting the ball into her mitt, but rather just nudged the ball towards the shortstop as he covered second for the out. Well done.

* The game ended on another play started by Lisa at second which was quite possibly the Play of the Year. It was an improbable, all-female, double-play that involved Lisa fielding the grounder and tossing it to Amber at first for out number one and then Amber zinging it across the diamond to Sonya who applied the tag on the greedy runner coming from second for out number two. I'm guessing the runner figured there was no way that a Co-ed D-league all-girl double play (or CEDLAGDP) was even possible. Can you blame him? We usually have a hard time just fielding the ball cleanly and then you never know what kind of circus is going to break out when the throw is attempted. This play involved not only a cleanly fielded ball, but two solid throws, two solid catches and one fantastic tag. It just goes to show ya that, in a season filled with sporadic fielding, there is always a chance that the planets will align and something magical will happen...like a CEDLAGDP.

* Game ball winner, Aimee, smashed a legitimate double to left field effectively putting her boyfriend and all the other men on our team to shame. She also made several gallant efforts in the outfield on some extremely difficult fly balls. It should be mentioned that, for the first time, the game ball was not delicious, cinnaminny, Goldschlager, but questionable Bacardi Gold rum. A much tougher shot which Aimee did not choose to immediately drink down even though a precedent was set a few weeks back. Anyhow, if any of you see the tiny bottles of Goldschlager (I went to three BevMos) please stock up.

* From the "Avenging Jessica" Department, we had at least three decent shots at breaking their female second baseman's rib, but failed on both attempts. Coach Nick had two attempts, once refusing to slide and not making contact and the other sliding beautifully, but still not making contact. Ric had the closest play at second, but also failed to take her out. Why must we be such good sports? We really need to suck it up and start intentionally hurting innocent girls. C'mon!

So the Hits have fallen to 1-4, but we get one more shot at each team and reaching .500 is still a possibility. Next week is another 9:30 game and we're playing The Team that Doesn't Swing, so get ready.

October 03, 2007

A Heartbreaker

The Luck Dragons got a little payback last night as they did to us exactly what we did to them in Week 1...only they didn't look as good doing it.

Pre-game beers fueled the Solid Gold Hits early surge. The balls were flying off our bats and, unencumbered by sobriety, we ran wild on the basepaths on our way to an 11-5 lead. Then, as the buzz died off, a series of great hits from the Luck Dragons really harshed our mellow.

In a saddening 4th inning, which I'd rather not talk about, the Dragons came back to tie. Then, despite a valiant effort, they scored the winning run in the bottom of the 5th.

Here are the highlights:

* Game ball winner, Dustin, made a few fantastic catches in the outfield. On one, he was just running a full-on sprint with his arm out and somehow he managed to get the ball in the tip of his glove. The Dragons have some great hitters and we would've lost by a lot more if not for speedy Dustin in the outfield. This is proof that is pays off to show up to the games 5 hours early to run drills.

* Lisa, as a "courtesy runner" for the injured (but toughing it out admirably) Heather, scored all the way from first base on a routine ball to the outfield. How courteous is that?

* Hillary had a great hit which kept our beer-fueled rally going strong in the 2nd inning.

*KC was the first person to get dirty as he barrelled into to home plate greedily trying to stretch a triple into a homer. He was out, but it was still awesome.

* Poor Sonya, who I feel terrible for, had to pitch again and, once again, did a much better job than the rest of us could have done. I think I'm gonna give her a break next week. This isn't really highlight, but I thought I'd mention it.

Ok, I guess that's it. Next week, we have our rematch with the Bulldogs (7:30). They're the ones that hurt Jessica so we'd better bring our A game.

Oh, and we're in last place now, but we can still turn things around. Here are the standings:

1. The Luck Dragons 3-1
2. The Bulldogs 2-1-1
3. Majority Rules 1-2-1
4. Solid Gold Hits 1-3

September 26, 2007

Another Bummer

The Solid Gold Hits had another rough one last night, but at least we didn't play like big sissies.

Even though we ended up losing 10-6, it was a much more respectable 10-6 loss than the one we experienced last week. This time around, we were mush more consistently offensively even though we hardly got to bat because the team refused to swing the bat. And if Majority Rules hadn't been so picky at the plate, we probably would've won. But they chose to, in effect, "run out the clock" once they got the lead. They took perfectly good pitches and seemed to bat forever. Out of the 1 hour game, I'm gonna say that they were batting for 58 minutes.

Game ball winner, Sonya, powered through Majority Rules' reluctance to swing and only walked a few sissy batters that should've been swinging anyhow.

Here are the highlights:

1) In a real mess of a play, Julie V. eventually ended up tagging a guy out at the plate...or at least near the plate. He came rounding third and the ball went to Julie who initially failed to tag the runner for the force out, but the runner also failed to touch home plate. It was a real battle of futility. No call was made by the ump, then a safe call was made, then Julie tagged the guy somewhere near the parking lot and then he was called out. I'm still not sure what was going on, but we got the out, so whatever.

2) Julie V. (again) perfectly blocked a ball thrown to home plate from the outfield. It looked like it hurt, but she took one for the team and saved a run from coming home.

3) Heather went down with a leg injury, but showed tremendous heart as she tried to run to first base with one functional leg. It was pretty much the most painful run to first I've ever seen. Even though she was out and even though she probably shouldn't have been trying to run for risk of making the injury worse and never being able to walk again, it was still an awesome show of dedication to the team.

4) Big hits...errr solid gold hits from Aimee, Paul, Lisa and probably some others, that helped us come back and take the lead after getting down early. Lisa also had a nifty semi-collision at third base which was pretty solid. Our girls were really going all out this game.

5) The new jerseys were amazing. To see us all out there, under the lights with those yellow beauties was truly a sight to behold. Now let's try not to ruin them in wash...or just don't wash them.

So we're 1-2 now, but there's still a lot season left. We're back up against the Luck Dragons next week and I feel another victory coming on. Also, since it's a 9:30 game, we will have a pre-game gathering of some kind. Stay tuned.

A Bump in the Road

Stupid Bulldogs.

After starting the game with one of our best innings ever, The Solid Gold Hits' bats went silent and we ended up losing 10-6.

The Hits were up 5-0 after the first inning, an inning which featured the first 7 batters getting on base safely. At this point we figured we were pretty much the best team ever. Turns out, we're just as mediocre as we've always been.

The next few innings were not pretty. We only managed to score one more run and we didn't communicate on defense so we were regularly getting in each other's way and throwing the ball to the wrong base. But, really, isn't that what D League softball is all about?

So we lost. We're still a respectable 1-1 and we still get two more shots at the Bulldogs this season. We're gonna be ok.

Here are the Game 2 highlights:

1) A dude from the Bulldogs fouled a ball all the way to 59th St. which almost hit what I think was a police car. Luckily the driver must have been a regular in the neighborhood as they were prepared to brake to avoid getting hit. Also, they stopped the car and fetched the ball for us.

2) Jessica earned herself a game ball not for her usual great defense or potent hitting, but for sacrificing her body for the team and experiencing the best collision on the field the Hits have ever seen. As she was covering second base, an out of control Bulldog came crashing into her, knocking her off her feet, spinning her around like a pinwheel a few times and crashing her to the ground with a frightening thud. Since it was pretty much the scariest thing that's ever happened, we all ran up to her to find her gasping for breath, but still managing to announce that her career was over. Turns out, it wasn't. After catching her breath she returned to her position and promptly fielded the next ball for a successful put out. The crowd went crazy. She also deserves another game ball for being the first person to immediately drink their game ball upon receiving it. Kudos to you, Jess. Way to set an example for the others.

3) This game featured amazing fan support. Many of these fans were shorter, younger people who were hepped up on a sugarbuzz. They had real and actual organized cheers. I didn't see it coming either. And, in an amazing display of self-control, they only requested a pitcher as opposed to a belly itcher one time...and to be fair, that girl was totally a belly itcher.

Welp, see you all next week at 7:30 as we take on Majority Rules.

Winners!!!

Woo Hoo!

The Solid Gold Hits have finally defeated the Luck Dragons!

With a stunning last-inning comeback the Hits emerged with a 9-8 victory to start the season in sole possession of first place (the other two teams in our league tied).

The Hits got contributions from everyone, but let me highlight a few of our finer moments.

Linda, who was reluctant to play, surprised herself by hitting the ball well, getting on base and doing an excellent job as a first-time catcher.

Dustin, Chris and yours truly, came through with an amazing relay from deep, deep, deep center field to get a guy out at the plate on the longest hit I've ever seen in Co-ed D League.

Lisa had a spectacular two-RBI hit over the left fielder's head and then came around to score herself. And, unlike her brother, did NOT embarrass her family by having a groundball bounce painfully off her knee.

And, finally, Hillary who showed masterful patience at the plate when she watched four bad pitches go by for the most important walk in Solid Gold Hits history... or at least since Dustin's walk against the Bulldogs last year. Her free pass set up the last-inning, game-winning hit and earned her a tiny bottle of Goldschlager which she will never drink.

Speaking of the dreaded Bulldogs, we play them at 8:30 next week. I can't stress enough how important it is to start carbo-loading immediately.

Fall Schedule Released!

Remember last season when all our games were at 6:30 or 7:30 and how we all hated 7:30 games because they were too late in the evening? Well, I hope you're ready to do a whole bunch of whining because we have three (count'em, three) 9:30 games this time around. I know this is well past many of our beddy-bye times, but luckily there is no rule agiasnt wearing your jammy-jams in the outfield.

Let's take a look at this season's competition.

THE LUCK DRAGONS
The Luck Dragons have the distinction of being the only team in the league that the Solid Gold Hits have not yet defeated. They were the ones that we had that ridiculous tie with and they were the ones that robbed us of a championship by beating us the the last game of the season. This season we'll get three more chances to beat them including the season opener on Tuesday.

THE BULLDOGS
Thanks to our end of season choke job, the Bulldogs were the champs last time around. Last season both of our games against the Bulldogs featured us getting behind early and then making amazing comebacks. One comeback brought us victory, the other brought us a respectable 6-run loss. Anyhow, they are sure to be contender's again this season and we'll face them three times.

MAJORITY RULES
These guys could be the X-factor. Last season we beat them twice, but once was by forfeit and the other was with them down a player. Apparently, many of them work at the Capitol and they have a hard time getting to games on time. However, with the later games this season, there's a good chance they'll actually show up. This could make them tougher to beat.

Welp, here's the schedule:
Sep. 11 - 7:30 vs. Luck Dragons
Sep. 18 - 8:30 vs. Bulldogs
Sep. 25 - 7:30 vs. Majority Rules
Oct. 2 - 9:30 vs. Luck Dragons
Oct. 9 - 7:30 vs. Bulldogs
Oct. 16 - 9:30 vs. Majority Rules
Oct. 23 - 6:30 vs. Luck Dragons
Oct. 30 - 9:30 vs. Bulldogs

Solid Gold Hits Ride Again

After much nagging and goading by the coach, the Solid Gold hits have reemerged for another exciting season of Coed D-League softball.

I just attended another thrilling pre-season coaches' meeting and I learned a few interesting things:

1) Our league has 4 teams in it this season - all of them were in our league last time including the rival Bulldogs and the Luck Dragons who spoiled our chance at a championship last time around.

2) No bye weeks!

3) There is another league playing the same night as us and get this: they are worse than us...at least in theory. We are in D1 league and they are D2 league. If my math is correct, that makes us one better.

4) Here's the bad part. With two divisions playing on the same night at the same field it means some games will have later start times. But who doesn't want to be playing softball at 10pm the day before Halloween?

I'll post the whole schedule soon, but for now all you need to know is that we start Tuesday (the 11th) at 7:30 against the Luck Dragons...or as I call them "those jackholes that beat us in our last game."

See you there!

And check back here for more excitign pre-season info.

Hits Fall in Finale

The Hits can hold their heads up high despite last night's 6-1 defeat at the hands of The Luck Dragons. Everyone played well, we hit the ball great (even though it was right at the defense) and we drank a lot afterwards.

Perhaps our downfall was being too sporting as we probably could have walked every at bat, but we swung at everything anyhow. After all, we are The Solid Gold Hits not The Solid Gold Walks*. I mean, it's rec league softball and walking is boring, so I say we stick with what we're doing.

Sure, we didn't win the championship, but at the end of the season last spring we were 1-7 with our average deficit somewhere around 50 runs per game. So we've come a long way and we can still out drink any team out there.

During our end of season party numerous accolades were handed out. Our "army of fans" were recognized with "trophies" made of peanuts and plastic army men, while Leticia took home a cocktail glass trophy adorned with a tiara and sunflower seeds to recognize her for being the "Perfect Attendance Princess" as she was the only member of the squad to make each game.

This year's MVP went to Sonya for her continued excellence and professionalism on the mound. Outside of Chris N., who is only able to be with us half the time, no one likes to pitch and Sonya has come through for us on many occasions.

After a team shot of Goldschlager, the official cinnamon schnapps of The Solid Gold Hits, we demolished 6 pizzas from Luigi's, the official sketchy pizza joint of The Solid Gold Hits and called it a night, the official time of day of The Solid Gold Hits. And so ended our season.

Thanks to everyone for coming out this year. Perhaps we'll do it again soon.

*This line was stolen by me from some older guy with a mustache.

Solid Gold Hits Take Over First Place!

The Solid Gold Hits needed a dramatic last inning rally to down the mighty Bulldogs 9-4 Tuesday night.

Down for most of the game, the Hits entered the final inning down 4-2 when Lisa legged out an infield single and Game Ball winner, Brett, brought her home with a 2-run home run to tie.

The Bulldogs left the door open for the Hits' last inning heroics by playing like big sissies. In the second to last inning, they attempted to "run out the clock" by walking slowly up to the plate and taking a bunch of pitches, but this plan backfired as they just ended up striking out and making fools of themselves. Then, after Brett's game-tying homer, with two outs and a runner on first, the sissy Bulldogs got the bright idea to intentionally walk Dustin so that they could pitch to a girl (Jessica) instead. This was one of your all-time backfires since they didn't know the rule that states if you walk a guy with 2 outs then the girl who is up next can decide if she wants to bat or simply take first base. Jessica simply took first base, Chris N. came up with the bases loaded and the rout was on. Way to know your rules, Bulldogs.

The Hits had spectacular performances right on down the line. Chris N. pitched another masterful game, Amber caught everything that was thrown her way at first base, all the outfielders made great plays, everybody made contact at the plate and many people were unselfish enough (with our surplus of players last night) to volunteer to sit out a few innings.

It was beautiful and it put the Hits into first place with one game remaining. We'll need to defeat the Luck Dragons next week to secure the league championship, but for now let's enjoy celebratory breakfast pizza.

Bulldogs Lose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

In what can only be described as the greatest miracle in sports history, the first place Bulldogs lost to lowly Quick Pitch. There's even a chance that they've lost twice, but I don't know for sure.

Either way, this means that next Tuesday's game (6:30pm) will be for first place and if we win our remaining two games we will be league champs. I didn't see it coming either.

May 29, 2007

Bye Week

The Solid Gold Hits have the night off, so use the energy you're saving to send some bad vibes to the Bulldogs. If they lose tonight, our next game will be a battle for first place.

In other news, our last game will be June 12th with post-game festivities (food and drink) at the nearby Browne/Leonti house. Everyone is welcome: players, kids, well-wishers - so mark your calendars.

I guess that's it. This is the part of the blog where I should give you some inspirational words to motivate you for the last two weeks of the season, but instead, here's a picture of a puppy in a flower pot. Now I've seen everything!

May 22, 2007

Winning Streak Extended...

...to two games.

The Solid Gold Hits struck early, once again, as they batted around in the first inning to go up 8-0 early. The inning was highlighted by a 2 RBI single from Leticia followed immediately by an RBI single down the 3rd baseline from Kristi.

Game ball winner, Chris N., pitched an amazing game striking out like 50 batters and making things really easy for the Hits' defense...which is good because sometimes the defense ain't so good...especially when the ball is hit to the shortstop.

It was pretty much one of your all time whoopins as the final score was 12-2 or something ridiculous like that.

Oh, and I should mention that there was some poor sport in a stupid Mets jersey on the other team whom it felt pretty good to beat.

So this stellar victory brings the Hits record to an impressive 4-1-1. Even with that pesky tie we're still alive in the race for the league championship. After our bye week next week, our next game we be against the rival Bulldogs on June 5 and if by some crazy chance some other team beats the stupid-good Bulldogs then we will be playing for first place. Woohoo!

Before I go, let me take the time to thank the whole team. It's tough to draw up that lineup every week while trying to be fair to everyone individually and to the team as whole and I appreciate the lack of whining. And I want to single out Paul here as being pretty much the best sport ever. He's been at every game and always says he's ready to play if we need him, but he's perfectly happy eating peanuts and cheering us on. Maybe he's just pushing for the position of team mascot so he can relive his college days as Bucky Badger, but I see it as just good sportsmanship. Anyhow, I hope to get you in the game someday, Paul.

Here, Bucky promotes reading. Is that Paul in there?

Hits Bounce Back from Unsatisfying Tie

A week after blowing a 5 run lead and ending up with a tie game, The Solid Gold Hits defeated cellar-dwellers, Quick Pitch, for a second time this season.

Oh, and before I go any further, let me apologize for the lateness of this update. I've been too busy celebrating this victory to type...also, I've been busy and sick.

Anyhow, it was another stellar performance by ace pitcher Sonya as she struck out the big, angry, scary guy on their team making him angrier and scarier...but still about the same size.

The day didn't get any better for Big Angry Scary Guy. During his second at bat he smashed the ball out to deep, deep, deep, deep left-center field, but Brett had smartly positioned himself in that exact spot for the out. In his third at bat, dude hit a screaming grounder to second where game-ball winner, Jessica, snagged it with a diving maneuver and then tossed it to first...of course, he was already rounding first by that time, but quick-thinking first baseman, Mike, applied the tag. I guess the guy thought he could out run Mike, but he must have been unaware that Mike was using The World's Largest Glove so he could pretty much tag anybody out from anywhere on the field.

The Hits went up 6-0 early and hung on late to win 6-5. While we can't be happy with our lack of production late in the game, you've got to like that early surge.

Other game highlights included:

*Coach Nick committing two errors on one play

*Brett getting called out for being a good sport and hitting a pitch that was well out of the strike zone

*Another exciting relay from deep, deep outfield to get a runner out at the plate

*8 post-game drinks at the Tallac Lounge for a total of $20.50.

Pics to come soon.

What's Worse Than Losing Two in a Row?

Losing one and tying the next.

The Solid Gold Hits were robbed of their third victory of the season on Tuesday night as they somehow, even though this is America, figured out a way to have a game end in a tie. This brings their record to an awkward 2-1-1. Still good enough for second place, but there can be no pride when you need to utilize a third column in order display your win-loss record.

Before I continue, let me first say that the Solid Gold Hits have the best fans in all of Tuesday night Co-ed D-League. Special thanks to Paul for bringing the bike horn to help cheer us on. Also, Paul, I know it's been replaced with the dinner bell, but each honk of the bike horn should still represent a Tourism booking, so I'll be expecting to see those contracts.

Anyhow, the Hits got off to an early lead as Game Ball winner Leticia extended her hitting streak to two games and Dustin and Chris N. hit big homeruns. It should also be mentioned that, as he rounded the bases, Chirs N. made everyone feel awkward as he pretended to grab Amanda's bottom(!) as he chased her around the bases. Apparently he forgot that her husband, his wife, his brother in-law, his impressionable young son and many innocent bystanders were trying to enjoy a nice ballgame in the park without his sick, perverted desires being forced down their throats. I'd like to apologize to Amanda and society in general. Also, where was our team photographer when we needed her?

Things kinda went downhill when the umpires started giving the other team extra outs. One batter received an extra pitch (which he hit VERY far) after his third strike and then, a few innings later, the same batter had a pop out reversed because the runner on second was wearing a wristwatch.

The game came down to an intense last inning as the Luck Dragons rallied. After bringing in two runs to tie the game, one of the Luck Dragons sent a ball in to deep right field. Luckily, The Solid Gold Hits performed a beautiful three man relay to get the potential game-winning run out at the plate. So, in a way, we were lucky to tie. In another, more accurate way, we were screwed.

Sadly, our league's strict time limits don't allow for extra innings to be played, but maybe I'll contact their coach and see if we can't settle things in some other way (i.e. an eating contest).

Also, there was one play where we tagged a girl out after she overran third slightly. It was kinda cheap, but I still say we got screwed.

Hits Suffer First Defeat

A stunning last-inning rally fell just short Tuesday night as the Solid Gold Hits suffered their first loss of 2007.

The Bulldogs were just as good as advertised as even their girls were hitting shots well over our outfielder's heads. Who'd a guessed?

Hits' ace pitcher and Game Ball recipient, Sonya, experienced some early-inning control problems, but powered through it and put the team in position for their amazing rally.

Midway through the game the Hits found themselves in a 10-0 hole. After playing some "lawyer ball" and looking for walks in the first few innings, The Bulldogs took the bats off their shoulders and sent softballs spraying all over the field. Julie V. summed up the experience when, as a hushed crowd watched a high pop fly head in her direction, she declared "Sh*t!"

That was a turning point in the game.

The next inning the Hits got on the board and going into the final inning they had closed the gap to 10-5.

In the top of the inning, some lucky hits by the Bulldogs padded their lead and, despite some spectacular defense including a ridiculous play where a pop-up bounced off one fielder's mitt and into another's, the Hits found themselves down 16-5 going into their last turn at bat.

But the Solid Gold Hits didn't rollover and die, they had the rally of all rallies which was highlighted by Leticia stretching a slow grounder into a double and then coming around to score. By the time the inning was over, everyone had batted (even the British guy got a hit with his silly Cricket swing), 7 runs were scored and, even though they lost (16-12), the Solid Gold Hits proved themselves worthy opponents of the formidable Bulldogs. We'll get'm next time.

Also, we drank a lot of beer afterwards.

Tuesday's Game Might Be Big...Maybe

First off, let me say that I have not seen official standings from the league office. When I asked the league guy about standings he said that the scorekeeper would have updated standings info "occasionally." So I don't really know anything except that the season is three weeks old and we haven't lost (of course, we had last week off).

I also know that after our second game some guy, that may or may not have been on a team in our league, said that the team playing after us (The Bulldogs) had won their Week #1 game by a score of 16-4. So if we believe him - and he looked like a pretty trustworthy guy - we can assume that the Bulldogs are pretty good.

Also, the Bulldogs haven't had their bye week yet, so there's a chance that they are 3-0. Of course, there's also a chance that that random guy was lying to me and the Bulldogs are no good and they are 0-3, but what are the chances of a random guy lying to me? Maybe 1 in 3 - I'll take those odds.

Here's my best guess as to what the standings might very well look like:

BULLDOGS - 3-0
SOLID GOLD HITS - 2-0
QUICK PITCH - 1- 2
MAJORITY RULES - 0-2
THE LUCK DRAGONS - 0-2

And if this is what the possible standings kinda look like then maybe there's a pretty good chance that tomorrow night's game may very well be a potential championship preview...possibly.

One thing's for sure though: it's time to start carbo-loading.

Game #2 Photos

The Solid Gold Hits showed up.

The fans showed up.

We all sat around waiting for the other team.

With nothing better to do, these guys did whatever it is they're doing here.

And Libby did this.

No caption needed.

Finally, the game begins!

Sheri comes around to score one of our may runs as
Julie hits her marathon pace while heading into second.

Z smells...a victory.
Which is good since it was forfeited to us 45 minutes ago.

Try showin' up on time next time, a-hole.

Hot Streak Continues (More or Less)

The Solid Gold hits improved to 2-0 last night as they defeated Majority Rules... twice. First the Hits won by forfeit as Majority Rules just couldn't make it on time. About half an hour later when their whole team finally showed up, the Hits took it to them once again in a scrimmage game beating them by a score of like 12-2 or something.

So the competition was a bit of a disappointment, but the Hits still had a a great showing. The team batted around in the first inning and Leticia continued her own personal hot streak of making contact as she once again almost legged out a single.

Newcomers KC and Amanda M. performed excellently and will undoubtedly be Solid Gold Hits mainstays for some time to come. Another Hits rookie, Amber B., proved herself a worthy firstbasewoman and even managed to score a run as her pants were falling down. That's dedication.

Perhaps more impressive than anything on the field was the support of the Solid Gold Hits fanbase. Even though it was windy and miserable and the other team didn't show up, the Hits fans were out in force and even ready to take the field should we have needed them (Paul, I'm going to have you sign the waivers so you can be a legal player and we can get you in the game next time).

So the game ball, went to a fan representative, Libby, who also performed her Team Mom duties by bringing snacks. Of course, by "game ball" I mean "tiny bottle of (Solid) Goldschlager."

More photos to come!

Solid Gold Hits Victorious in Debut!

As we all assumed, the Solid Gold Hits are pretty much the best softball team ever.

Last night the Hits stuck it to "Quick Pitch" and emerged with a 5-2 victory.

Sonya pitched a beautiful game, striking out at least two batters and getting out of some tough jams.

Last year's MVP, Leticia, made great contact at the plate and almost legged out an infield single. Her secret to improvement: Keeping her eye on the ball. She was also a vital part of the game's most spectacular play which involved a relay from the catcher to the third baseman to the first baseman for the out on a swinging bunt. For those of you keeping score at home that's the ol' 2-5-3 ground out.

As a result of that amazing play and others, third baseman Chris C. was awarded the Game Ball. he fielded pretty much every ball that the other team hit, including the relay, a laser-shot down the line and the game-ending double-play. He also got the Hits on the board in the 3rd inning with a 3-run homerun.

The Hits were down 1-0 early after a monster homerun by some huge guy on "Quick Pitch" (his first at bat was a screaming low liner that made Coach Nick scream like a small girl at SS as he ducked out of the way).

After Chris's homer and a couple insurance runs, the Hits found themselves up 5-1 going into the last inning. Then with two runners on (including the aforementioned "huge guy") Sonya got the batter to hit a grounder to Chris down the third baseline where he grabbed it, touched the bag and zinged it down to Mike at 1B to seal the victory.

So after Week 1 the Solid Gold Hits find themselves atop the leaderboard in Tuesday Night Co-Ed D League. I can almost feel the itch of the championship t-shirt on my back.

Softball Rules You Might Like To Know

The rules for Co-Ed D League Softball are slightly different from those of its parent game of baseball. Most rule changes are in there to keep us from wasting the time of others and/or hurting ourselves.

The baseball basics are still in place: 3 strikes, you're out, 3 outs per team per inning, unlimited spitting and crotch scratching, etc.

Here are some of the differences:

10 Defensive Players
We softballers don't quite cover the ground we used to. Therefore, we are given an extra fielder to help us out. This player can be put wherever the coach wants. Usually, this means a fourth outfielder, but if coach feels like it (i.e. is drunk) he could play two catchers or have someone sit in the car.

Foul Ball Strikeouts
In baseball you can foul off balls all day long if you like, but we don't get that luxury. Foul balls equal strikes in this league. If you've got two strikes and you foul off the next pitch: you're outta there buddy. But, hey, at least you made contact.

7 Innings or 1 Hour Limit
All games have a 1 hour time limit and no new innings may start after 55 minutes. If we played real fast and somehow managed to squeeze in 7 innings before an hour had passed then the game would also be over. This isn't going to happen. We'll be lucky to get in 4 innings. Don't get your hopes up.

Alternating Boy/Girl Lineup
We are not allowed to have two boys or two girls bat in a row. If we only have 9 players (the minimum we can play) then the vacant 10th spot in the lineup is counted as an out each time through. So, let's show up to the games, eh?

Two 1st Bases
To avoid collisions at first the league has decided that we need two bases there. There will be the normal white base and next to that will be an odd looking orange base. After you hit the ball run to the orange one. When you are fielding first base, use the white one.

Also this only applies when there is a play at first. If you hit a double, feel free to use the regular white bag.

NOTE: One rule that is the same in this league as it is in baseball is that you can run through first base. This means that when you hit a single you can run to first, touch the base and sprint on past it straight into the outfield (not too far) without breaking your stride. As long as you don't make a move like you're going to continue on to second base the defense cannot tag you out. Pretty great, eh? Keep in mind though, this only works at first base. Don't go runnin' through second or third.

Weird Two Base Walk Rule
In an attempt to weasel out victories, sometimes teams try to avoid pitching to the opposing team's best batter because he hits nothing but home runs. In the interest of sportsmanship the league has decided that if a team walks a male batter and there are 2 outs then the guy gets to "walk" all the way to second base. And then, get this, the girl batting after him can either decide to bat or she can simply take first base and let the next guy in the lineup bat. Somewhere Alexander Cartwright is spinning in his grave (he invented baseball...unless Abner Doubleday did...or someone else. Of course the rules were a lot different back then too. Forget I brought it up. Odd that I decided to type all this out instead of just deleting it.)

There are more weird rules that might pop up from time to time, but these are the basics.

Also, if you were wondering, you can't wear metal spikes, but you are allowed to slide. Luckily, plastic cleats can still do plenty of damage.

Team Unity

Ok team, here's the deal: apparently some of you have "lives outside of softball." This is unacceptable and does not promote team unity.

Some of you wrong-thinkers have decided to tend to the needs of your "families" instead of attending Tuesdays opening night game.

Here is a list of things which will be considered "rotten excuses" for missing a game:

*T-ball games

* School plays

* Family vacations

* Graduation ceremonies

* Work

* Grandma's birthday

* Grandma's surgery

* Anything grandma related

* Sickness

* Severe injuries

* Helping the less fortunate

* Nobel Prize acceptance ceremonies

* Hot air balloon rides

* Weddings (yours or others)

* Morbid obesity

* Pretty much anything else

Upon missing their first game with one of the above rotten excuses, offenders will be subject to a disappointed head shake and "the ol' stink eye" from the coach. If a second offense arises, the disappointed shake will be slightly more disappointed and the ol' stinkeye will be just a tad stinkier. The intensity of these punishments will become more severe with each offense culminating in a fist shaken above the head in frustration. You don't want that, do you?

That said, let me know if you'll be available for the game.

Thanks.

First Game Announced!

The Solid Gold Hits will kick-off their historic 3rd season on Tuesday April 10th at 6:30pm at Tahoe Park.

We will be playing a team called "Quick Pitch" which, if accurate, is not in the spirit of slow-pitch softball. I'm preparing the protest forms already.

Season Actually Starting Soon

Looks like Tuesday, April 10th will be our first game. I will get an actual game time and a full season schedule at the mandatory pre-season coach's meeting I get to go to next Thursday evening. Fun.

Practice Recap

The Slugs and the Solid Gold Hits met for the first and only practice of the season. After drills were run with moderate success the two teams scrimmaged resulting in an 8-4 (approximately) win for the Slugs. To be fair, they did borrow the Hits' Sonya as their pitcher and she's awful tough to hit.

Highlights of the day included:

* The debut of "The Bruiser"
* The first slow pitch softball bunt ever
* Z diving for everything
* Coach Nick nearly passing out after having to sprint around the bases
* Like 8 errors in the infield
* John's hair flowing beautifully in the wind as he fielded grounders.
* One bench clearing brawl.

The Most Important Post Ever

Hi Team(s)!

Let's talk bbq. Specifically post-practice bbq this Saturday. This is going to be a potluck style affair. In addition to your softball equipment and a good attitude also bring a salad, appetizer or beverage of some kind (or any combination thereof) with you to practice. Our Team Mom, Libby, will collect the food/drinks at the beginning of practice and transport them to The Party House where we will rendezvous with them a couple hours later.

I am forming a meat team that will be designated to help provide the meat and all the meat-fixin's. If I don't contact you regarding being part of Team Meat then you are free to bring whatever you like. I'm assuming there has got to be at least one vegatarian in the group so Team Meat will also throw in a Gardenburger or two, but don't get too comfortable, Sproutsy, Team Meat will not always be this generous.

If you have any questions, please contact me at nleonti@gmail.com.

Practice/BBQ Update

I hope everybody got the following email:

Howdy Slugs and Solid Gold Hits,

OK, we have decided on our post-practice bbq destination. The Solid Gold Hits' Sheri Graciano has graciously offered up her beautiful home as our party pad. It' a short drive from the park and, unlike the park, her house allows alcohol consumption - it's even encouraged. And I'm pretty sure last time I was at Sheri's I had a margarita that was made in a homemade blender that was fashioned out of a garbage disposal or boat motor or something. What more could we ask for?

Love Forever,
Coach Nick

Suggested Pre-Season Viewing

I know you’ve all been training rigorously this off-season for the upcoming season. But every once in a while you’ve got to step away from the weight room and work on the mental side of the game. By that, of course, I mean you should watch movies. Here is a list of titles I feel will help your game.

Field of Dreams
In Kevin Costner’s trilogy of baseball movies this is one of the two that people have actually seen. It’s also the cheesiest one assuming that the one nobody saw wasn’t cheesy. Also, I’m assuming that “The Postman” wasn’t about baseball, but if it is then Kevin Costner has a tetralogy (that’s a triology plus one – look it up) of baseball movies, but there are still only two that people have seen. Anyhow, I’m tired of all this Kevin Costner bashing. If you want a cheesy movie that might make you appreciate baseball/softball a little more then watch this. Also this is my second favorite movie starring Sacramento’s own Timothy Busfield (#1 is Sneakers). Bonus point to anyone who can name the other actor that’s in both those movies. Not sure what the bonus point will get you, but it never hurts to have a bonus point.

Major League
I’m pretty sure I don’t need to tell you what this is about. Jobu needs a refill.

The Natural
In this movie, a depression-era Robert Redford makes his own bat out of a tree that was struck by lightning. Coincidentally, this is exactly how The Bruiser (see previous post) came to be…except instead of lightning hitting a tree and me carving it – I just ordered it online. To be fair, internet connections were way slower in the 1930s. Remember those old crank-operated modems? Those were the days.

The Sandlot
I’ve never actually seen this movie, but the scene with that huge dog sure looks funny. It’s about baseball right? And what ever happened to that fat kid?

GoodFellas
Ok, so this isn’t a baseball movie, but there are a lot of similarities. You know that scene where Ray Liotta thinks the dude across the street was screwin’ with his wife and he’s just completely crazy-pissed and he grabs the gun he has hidden in the car and you think he’s gonna go shoot the guy, but instead he just pistol whips him…HARD. Well, that’s the kind of coach I’d like to be.

The Best Bat Ever: The Story of The Bruiser
This isn’t a real movie, you ass.

Rocky
Just watch the whole series. There are some great training montages that can show you how to prepare for the season. Like that one scene where Stallone chases that chicken. What a great workout! Also that scene in Rocky IV where “No Easy Way Out” is playing and Stallone shifts his Lambourghini like 100 times without looking at the road is pretty inspirational.

The Karate Kid
Try to be best cuz you’re only a man and a man’s gotta learn to take it. Try to believe though the going gets rough that you gotta hang tough to make it. History repeats itself. Try and you’ll succeed. Never doubt that you’re the one and you can have your dreams! You’re the best around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down.

Between that song and the infamous “I hate this bike!” scene there are many lessons to be learned here. Also, there is no pain in the Solid Gold Hits dojo.

Sense and Sensibility
When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships are sorely tried. But this is a romance, and through the hardships and heartbreak, true love and a happy ending will find their way for both the sister who is all sense and the one who is all sensibility.

Just kidding, get Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure instead. He rides a cool bike and builds this awesome machine that makes breakfast for him! Wouldn’t it be awesome if we rode cool bikes to our games!?

Okay, I guess that’s it for now.

Practice w/ The Slugs

In the past when the Solid Gold Hits have needed a ringer, we've turned to our sister team, The Slugs. Now we find ourselves in the same league.

I've been in contact with The Slugs coach, Tamara, and we have decided to organize a joint pre-season practice. In a perfect world we could get a real scrimmage going, but that all depends on attendance.

The practice will be at Tahoe Park on Saturday, March 24th at noon.

Following the practice there will be bbq and adult beverages at an as yet unspecified Tahoe Park house. Keep an eye out for further details and an Evite.

Bruiser Update

Ok, it's not a donation jar, it's a donation box and it's already got $6.50 in it. Also, there's a bake sale in effect. A donation may score you a delicious snack.

Come Together for "The Bruiser"

No team can compete without proper equipment. I'm pretty sure that's why we lost so many games last year. It wasn't because we couldn't hit, catch, throw, run or remain sober for the duration of a game - it was because we didn't have really cool equipment - specifically, a bat.

After asking people to let me know if they had any bats and/or balls and not getting any response, I have decided that it's time for action.

An exhaustive search has resulted in the discovery of a little thing called "The Bruiser." With it's 34 inches of pure aluminum power, totally bitchen logo and pleasingly moderate price, it's the perfect bat to put the Solid Gold Hits over the top.

It's $69.99 from the Sports Authority and I'll be starting a donation jar at my desk if you're interested in investing in the future of our team. With the deal we got on registration, I'm sure you can find a few extra pennies to toss into the jar. I mean, look how cool this bat is.

March 05, 2007

Team Photographer Announced

Proper documentation of this historic season is crucial to the education of future generations. Therefore tiny Melanie Light (photograph at right) is volunteering her time and artistic vision to become the Solid Gold Hits official team photographer.
And while we all want to look good on camera let's try to keep showboating to a minimum...unless you do something really, really cool.
NOTE: Melanie's skills are already on display on this page. Look for her in the reflection of Coach Nick's glasses below.

March 02, 2007

Siino Appointed to Team Mom

Libby Siino (seen here in an artist's rendition) has been appointed to the position of Team Mom.

Just like real Team Moms in little league, it will be Siino's job to cheer us on and encourage us even though, secretly, she is ashamed of us and knows we'll never amount to anything. In addition to being a cheerleader, her tasks will include securing tables at the post-game drinking destination and collecting money for post-game food. She will also complete other logistical tasks as needed.

Spring Training Extended

A call has come from the league office! Here's the deal: there are currently two nights scheduled for our division (the very competitive Coed D-league...and, no, there is no E league) and those nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are currently signed up for Tuesdays, but they are extending the registration deadline to see if a few more teams will sign up. If more teams do not sign up then the Tuesday and Thursday leagues will be combined into one night - I would assume Tuesday or Thursday.
Either way, games should start the week of April 9th. So we have some time to prepare our skills (e.g. hitting, catching, drinking). Keep checking back for info on a practice/bbq. It'll be fun. Trust me.

February 26, 2007

Welcome!

Coach Nick here.

Welcome to our new blog! Be sure to stop by often to check game times, read game summaries, get helpful softball tips and more.

As of right now we don't know which night of the week we'll be playing. It has, however, been narrowed down to Tuesday or Thursday. I know that Grey's Anatomy fans are rooting for Tuesday, Gilmore Girls fans are rooting for Thursday and American Idol fans are rooting for the whole season to be cancelled. My advice? Grow up or get a Tivo (I choose the latter).

While we're waiting for details from the league office, look for your gear. If anybody needs a glove or cleats let me know. I know there are some extras floatin' around out there. Also, if you own a bat and/or balls please let me know. I feel that having at least one bat for the team will have a serious positive affect on our success.

And don't forget to check back here often. You won't regret it.
